How to Determine What Starter Rotation Is Needed For Your Engine

Depending on your mounting configuration you can see whether you need a Clockwise (CW, Right Hand Rotation) starter, or a Counter-Clockwise (CCW, Left Hand Rotation) starter!

Depending on your mounting configuration you can see whether you need a Clockwise (CW, Right Hand Rotation) starter, or a Counter-Clockwise (CCW, Left Hand Rotation) starter!
Groove Method for Determining Starter Rotaion:
- Hold the starter so that the nose cone (or drive) is pointed up, and the com-end plate is pointed down.
- Take a close look at the tip of each tooth on the gear. There will be a beveled (slanted) edge on one side of the tooth or the other.
- If the beveled edge is on the right, the starter is RIGHT HAND (Clockwise CW) ROTATION.
- If the beveled edge is on the left, the starter is LEFT HAND (Counter-Clockwise CCW) ROTATION.
